Preface

Mary Schofield (1919 - 2000) was a life-long lover of nature, of gardening and of the Methodist Church. She lived in Farnley near Leeds in Yorkshire, England all her life. The setting of the book is in Easingwold just north of York - about thirty miles from home, which was quite a long way in those days. The story is of Mary's adventures, tribulations and joys as a 'Land Girl'

The Women's Land Army was intended to ensure the food supply from the farms. The men who worked the farms had been conscripted to fight the Second World War which Britain entered in September 1939, and the Land Girls went to the farms to do the work. Initially, it was a volunteer effort; later it was by conscription.

Mary joined the Land Army in April 1942 when she was 23 years old and stayed working with the same family for several years.

The following web site describes conditions during the war. The link on the home page to Land Girls tells about the organization. .... Land Girls
